Another Year Nearly Over – Smarter News 06/12/23 – Shaun is going nowhere!

We hope everyone is well and looking forward to the festive period. It’s about this point in the calendar where most of us suddenly realise the year is drawing to a close and the new year is fast approaching. Time to reflect and time to look forwards to what the new year will bring.

2023 has been a great year for us and one that we, as a team, can feel proud of. As many of you know, 2022 saw some major changes to the Smarter Accounting Team personnel. 2023 was always going to be hard coping with such changes, but the Team has pulled together and met the challenge, and as a result we believe we are in our strongest position yet. We are proud of you team and thank each one of you for the part that you have played.

We’ve seen some new faces in the team and Michelle was appointed internally as Associate Partner mid-year adding another dynamic to the partnership team. A welcome addition to pull us into line! The 3 new additions to the team, across both offices, have allowed us to further consolidate what we do and give us more capacity for you, our clients. Alongside that, many of the existing team have continued to grow and develop, with Smarter now proudly having Authorised Training Employer status with ICAEW and our first trainee chartered accountant. Long may this continue. We are keen on developing internal talent and these guys are the future face of Smarter Accounting.

We’re proud to support a number of local community initiatives including Crediton RFC, Teignmouth Thunderbirds Netball Club and Smarter Events.  The Smarter Events Ball raised £3k for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) in September, and we’re looking forward to sponsoring a handful of exciting events via Smarter Events in aid of CHSW in 2024 – more details can be found on Eventbrite.

So what does 2024 hold for Smarter Accounting? It will continue to be a busy and important year for us, but the major things we’re looking forward to are:

• Reaching the end of January! January is the last month for the 2022/23 self-assessment tax returns to be filed. It is our busiest month of the year and is always tough. To get to the end having met the deadline is always an achievement. Quick reminder, if you have not yet got your 2022/23 records to us, get them into us as soon as you can. It really is a case of the sooner the better!
• Shaun is going nowhere! Some may have seen some social media posts in recent days promoting that Shaun has taken up a new Financial Director role. This is a role that Shaun has been carrying out for 9 months now and does not change his position with Smarter Accounting. He’s still here and going nowhere.
• Development & Growth
  • Internal Process and Procedures – Smarter Accounting is like any other business; in that we are constantly trying to improve our processes and procedures. In 2023 we have made improvements, but we have a big list for 2024 which includes looking at the green agenda and continuing our journey into the electronic world, rather than traditional paper.
  • Client Systems – We work with a lot of clients, offering the tax and accountancy advice that you would expect. We have done a lot of work with clients moving them onto new systems, particularly Xero. HMRC are continuing their drive to an electronic world and therefore we will look to help a lot more clients with this transition. If you want to explore options available to you then contact us and we can discuss options that may work for you.

Finally, thank you for being clients of Smarter Accounting.  We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year!  Our offices will be closed for Christmas from 1.00pm on Friday 22nd December 2023, reopening at 9am on Tuesday 2^nd January 2024.
