We hope that you are all well. The weather has been drier, although a lot colder. January is fast coming to an end and spring is around the corner.
At Smarter Accounting, the tax return season has been in full swing over the last few weeks. January always seems a long month and the guys in the office will be happy for a bit of a break in February! So far in January we have processed over 300 returns for clients. And we are now down to the final few. The last couple of days will involve some long hours ensuring that we meet the deadlines to avoid penalties for clients.
This is just a quick blog to remind you of a few things:
- If we’ve sent your tax return to you for signing then please do sign and return it as soon as possible to the relevant office. A lot of returns this year have been sent out for electronic signature, which means that the return can be signed very quickly and comes back to us instantly.
- If you have a tax payment to make by the 31 January 2023 then ensure that you get it paid in time. Late payments could result in fines. If you are struggling to pay then contact HMRC to make a time to pay arrangement. As long as you have made an arrangement with HMRC they won’t issue fines against you. You have two options for contacting HMRC to make such an arrangement:
- Sign into your personal Government Gateway ID. You can make a time to pay arrangement through the system (Self-Assessment Payment Plan Link). This is probably the quickest way. If you don’t have a personal Government Gateway ID then you can get one easily. The link will give you the option to set up a Government Gateway ID if you don’t have one
- Phone the Self-Assessment Payment helpline on 0300 200 3822
- If you haven’t yet brought your tax return information in and need a tax return filing by 31 January, then contact the office urgently and we will see what we can do for you. Over the past few months we have been contacting clients for information, but there are still a few that have not got their information in. Failure to file on time will result in a penalty and those can rise to £1,700. Getting your tax return done on time will avoid such penalties
